3 novembre Beware of the bearsI am now certain the Jehovah's Witnesses are on a mass recruitment drive. Yesterday I returned from the office as I had forgotten a form a needed for the afternoon when there was a loud banging on the door. "Who do you think that is?" I said to my housemate as I went to answer the front door.
"Hello" said the woman at the door, "how are you?". "Fine" I said, "and how are you?". Shocked by this question she replied "Oooh, I'm fine too" and I thought great. So the conversion progressed in the usual way (I won't bore you with the actually conversion, firstly because I can't remember the exact words to the conversation, and secondly I don't really want to dullen an already tedious blog entry). It didn't take me long to twig that the folks (for there were two, the other one was quiet and looked old enough to have possibly known Jehovah) standing in front of me were from some religious faction. "Let me read you a passage from the bible" she said, as I thought "Why not, just humour her and she'll go away". So she read the passage. I forget what the exact passage was, possibly because I'm not a religious person and so don't take much interest in the bible, but at the end of the passage she said "And wouldn't it be nice if the world was like that?". I looked at her quizically which forced the other one to speak, "Do you believe in a God?". This being a deeply philoshophical question for me at this time on a Wednesday morning I answered with "Not as such", "but wouldn't it be good if the world was a perfect place like God intented". By this point I was thinking fat chance of that ever happening, and then thought these people were possibly delusional. At no point would I ever think a person, or a religion as being delusional, but I think these women were taking the proverbial biscuit. "Not with all the politians around the world, God couldn't have it all his own way"
"So", as now I was thinking aloud, and also always wanted the religious view on this "why then, if God wants this world, is he killing people in the Tsunami, earthquakes and hurricanes?". Her reply was somewhat baffling to me and perhaps at this time I had turned off and started humming to myself. She say "God isn't punishing them, they are just in the wrong place at the wrong time when He sends these disasters". This is slightly different to another blog entry I found on the matter. She's possibly put it more elegantly than I ever could.
With this reply I thought (in my head this time) "So then, the last time I looked in a book I'm sure it said that earthquakes and Tsunamis were seismic events and there is scientific proof to back this stuff up. But these guys are saying that these events are send by God and kills people for no apparent reason because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. No doubt they also think the world is 7000 years old, we are all decended from a devine being and that Darwin is wrong about the whole evolution thingy". But instead I said "Ah right" - I was bored.
So eventually after me trying to show them the errors of their ways, they decided to give me one of their lovely leaflets. The one with the two people stroking a grizzly bear. A GRIZZLY BEAR FOR GOODNESS SAKE! So now I know they were taking the biscuit. I would never want to come across a grizzly bear unless it was in a zoo, I were in a cage, or it were dead (I have the upmost respect for the grizzly in the fact that they are strong buggers!) It would probably tear me limb from limb after smelling the fear. Perhaps it's one of these Turkish dancing bears, therefore this is a cruel religion. Don't mess with nature and nature won't mess with you.
Life in a Peaceful New World? Some people are prejudiced against religions or skin colour. I on the other hand is so intolerant (only) of stupidity born in a brain that obviously hasn't thought through what it's just said. So much so that sometimes you have to grit my teeth and bare with what some morons have to say. And no, I'm not stuck in my ways!
So OK, this entry was a little harsh, but I think I've got off my chest what I wanted to say.
A Brave New World? Not with you lot thanks! And beware of the bears.
And beware of lions as well, run little girl run...
